How To Test If Your Toilet Is Running & Wasting Water

The easiest way to check if your toilet is leaking is to remove the lid on the tank and look to see if the flapper at the base of the tank is closed, there is no water flowing into the overflow tube when the tank is full, and that the chain attached to the flapper is not tangled up or caught under the flapper itself.

If the flapper appears to be closed on first inspection, flush the toilet and watch to see if the flapper drops completely while the tank refills with water. If it appears the flapper has dropped completely, add several drops of dark food colouring into the tank. Wait for a least 30 mins, and if you see any trace of colour in the toilet bowl afterwards then there is a leak. Most likely the flapper is not forming a water tight seal and it will need to be replaced.

Common Toilet Issues

Considering toilets are one of the most used fixtures in your home, and account for a significant amount of your monthly water usage, clogs and repairs can occur occasionally. Toilets are composed of several moving parts and can stop working properly for numerous reasons such as:

Clogs

Common clogging issues are usually the result of flushing foreign objects down the drain and can cause serious problems for your sewer system creating severe backups. Besides human waste, the only items recommended to flush down the toilet are soft paper products like toilet paper and thin napkins.

Broken Tank

Consistently finding water around your toilet is a clear sign of a toilet leak. One of the major issues is a broken or cracked toilet tank, and although they may not always be visible even hair line cracks in the tank can significantly affect your water bill and damage your floor.

Worn Flapper Valve

A flapper is the piece of your toilet that allows water to move from the cistern into the toilet bowl and fill up the bowl after the toilet is flushed. A deteriorated flapper valve can cause your toilet to flush on its own or to run constantly, which could make your water bill increase significantly.

Worn Washer Bolts & Loose Connections

If you keep finding random puddles of water under the toilet tank, there are a couple of likely explanations. One is worn washer bolts. Another leading cause of a leaking toilet are loose connections. Over time pieces fall out or become loose.

Condensation

A poorly insulated tank might be the cause of the condensation and why you are finding water on your bathroom floor.

We can have your toilet problems resolved quickly by our experienced and friendly plumbers. Our plumbing toilet repair specialists can diagnose your problem, and offer solutions with a complete quote before performing any repairs. If the problem is stemming from a clogged drain or any other problem outside of the toilet itself, our journeyman plumbers will be able to show you the problem and discuss all possible solutions with you before beginning any work.
